City Eclogue

I found it difficult to try and explain the whole book and putting all of the poems together as one thing. Although it seems as if all of the poems have one thing in common which is the city and the imagery that explains it. I decided to focus on one certain piece that I really liked. It's on page 22 called "As it crested the hill". If found it interesting because it kind of compares the universe to this one street. It talks about how the street crested the hill, which is mentioned about three times. I also thing that they are using crest on purpose because it relates to how a moon can be a crest. This one street that is being talked about is like the moon because it oversees and figuratively touches the rest of the city just like the moon looks over the Earth. The rest of the poem however confused me a bit because it never really tied back into the crested hill or the street, it only focused on the universe and the Earth. The very last two lines might also have some significance because it states the same line, "the way the earth comes gliding", but the second time is shown as, "The Way Earth   comes gliding." The space and capitalization really change the way you say it.

Poetry

Sonnets have always been a bit of a struggle for me to understand, however some of the ones we read actually hit home for me. Many of the Shakespeare pieces were about relationships, love, heartbreak and those are always relate able to everyone whether they want to admit it or not. I really enjoyed picking some of the more complicated sonnets apart and discovering what they meant; it is almost like they are all a puzzle that take time to assemble and fit together to make one picture that makes sense. Working in groups to come up with ideas and to figure out meanings and look up words really does make the understanding process a lot easier. When you put multiple brains who are thinking in different directions and have different perspectives it becomes very interesting to hear what others have to say. We have some characters in our class so it is nice and refreshing to hear all of the conflicting and unusual interpretations that maybe I would have never come up with because I am not thinking like them, or I haven't experienced the things they have experienced. My favorite poem was the jumbled up "sonnet" that in order to read you had to skip every line and read it in a crazy way for it to make sense. Once we read it the way it was supposed to be read then it had a completely different meaning. That was what made me think, "wow okay maybe this whole poetry thing isn't as lame as I thought, because that was awesome!" Reading and analyzing the poetry from last week definitely has me better prepared and inspired to create my own sonnets.

Hi, I'm Sydney

HELLO, yes my name is Sydney Stuck. Although I am happy with the little pun going on in "stuck in a blog" my last name is actually pronounced "stuke." I'm from Findlay, Ohio where I just graduated from a class of about 100 at Liberty Benton. I am a freshmen here at Eastern Michigan University, majoring in journalism. I'm not sure what I want to do yet with a degree in journalism because there are so many different choices, which would explain why I am taking an almost three hour creative writing class on Wednesday nights. I cannot wait to test the waters and judge my skills to try and figure out what's in store for my future as a journalist. Because I am looking for improvement and I know that there is so much to learn, everyone please, criticism would be great! Hey if my blog sucks, let me know that it sucks because not only will I continue to do the same things in other blogs, but I will think I'm awesome when in reality I'm just making a fool out of myself. YIKES. Other than beginning my education here I also enjoy being active, playing soccer, basketball, and running. When I'm not busy with homework or sports I like to make my almost full time hobby being around my friends and getting to meet as many great people that I can. Friends and family are what gets me through my every day routine, so while away from my family here at school my friends are very important to me. I'm a very outgoing, curious girl who just loves life and is looking to make as many memories as I possibly can while working toward my degree here at EMU.
